In a country where Google Maps is just starting to branch out of the big cities, the Rough Guide to Peru helps point you in the direction of good food, a nice place to stay, and some reasonable historical information about the various sites you might visit. It offers enough information about each city that you can plan out your day (or even entire trip) based on the information here. The intro sections to each region and city are good summaries of the history and attitudes that have resulted in present-day Peru. While a local guide to something like Machu Picchu would certainly know more precise details, what you'd be able to remember afterwards is about the same content found in the Guide.Unfortunately, and perhaps not many travel publishers consider this, but the book is thick and heavy. It covers all of Peru, sometimes in excruciating detail, and as such I found myself unwilling to cart it around the city in my daypack on the off-chance I might want to pull it out to understand more about some church or government building. I'm not slamming the accuracy of the information (which is around the usual standards, though restaurants do often move and I found it was fairly easy to find better local ones just by talking around). It's just that I'd rather do the research at the hostel/hotel room and then just roll with it the rest of the day. Because carting this thing around 'just-in-case' isn't worth the effort. And that's why I knock it down a star.

Much of the information (including addresses and general locations of attractions) is incorrect and the accommodations listed are all high end, even the ones described as cheap or backpacker destinations start at triple or more the price of actual low-end peruvian hotels and hostels. Bus companies listed are also often incorrect. This book has caused me more trouble than anything by leading me to think I could visit places that then are not where it says they are or less accessible than implied and if I could get my money back I would.
Travel the world with only the Rough Guides-love them!
My wife and I went to Peru in December 2012, used this guide, and found it helpful and informative. Cuzco and Lima sections were great and up to date. Section on Trujillo was good but sent us to a few restaurants that had been closed for quite some time, so 4 stars.
Great condition, useful, took it to Peru even though it was on the heavy side. I used it as a table book at the hotel to reference it at noght for the next day.
It really helped a lot as I looked forward to our daily planning!
