This is a fast-paced contemporary novel with just a twist of fantasy. While I was reading it I actually believed in the idea that Intuits exist! The character of Deandra was relatable and I felt like I knew her. I also loved the book within the book and really enjoyed reading about life in the 17th century. I was sorry when A Few Simple Truths ended and I hope Ellen Lechter will continue with Deandra's story in another book.Product details

I'm normally not a fan of time travel books (especially science fiction ones) but this book is really focused on character and plot. I especially loved the historic backdrop of the main character's time travel adventure; set in New Enlgand during the Salem Witch era it provides not only an exciting story, but a relaistic depiction of that period. The present story also kept my attention- fast moving, interesting with a likeable protagonist. For anyone who enjoys Diana Gabaldon you will love this book!
I am not one to typically write a review but I felt that this novel deserved it after finishing it. Lechter creates a world filled with magic and imagination while still remaining in the confines of an older audience. She manages to weave a mesmerizing set of characters that seem both realistic and plausible. Deandra, a 40-something year old mother, finds out that she is a descendant of magical ancestors called Intuits (not to be mistaken with Inuits), and quickly learns how she can unlock these powers herself. Of course, all power comes with a cost and Deandra's life changes as her newfound abilities affect her relationship with her family and her friends. Even by including magic, and vivid tales of adventure lived by Deandra's past ancestors, Lechter still incorporates more familiar elements such as lust, endearing conversations, and a marriage that isn't as perfect as it seems. The story is gripping and enchanting and should be a must-read for any fan of fiction. In fact, you may even learn "A Few Simple Truths" about yourself along the way.
This book interested me initially as the main character is going through a mid-life "discovery" of her own. Deandra travels through difficult challenges as she tries to balance conflicting obligations- to the family, to her job, and to herself. In the end I loved this book as it was rich with complex characters, intriguing plots, history, and even a little bit of fantasy. I definitely recommend this book and hope that there is a second to follow soon
